PARIS AW12 Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccoli have made Valentino their own. Fresh. Youthful. And, this season, folkloric. Enchanting native motifs mixed with jacquards, soft caped leathers and their signature macramé seams. Here were: passementerie details, Aran sweaters embellished with crystals, magic-carpet-like coat dresses. From blacks to taupe, white, the obligatory red, it was the innocence and carefree spirit – think Keira Knightly in Dr. Zhivago – that makes Valentino once more a modern contender in the fashion arena. Lace, ruffles, charm and not a Heidi in the hills in sight. CM
